Nexus Veterinary Specialists

Next Level Veterinary Medicine

Welcome to Nexus Veterinary Specialists!

At Nexus, our mission is simple. We work with your family veterinarian to ensure your pets receive the best care possible. As a Specialty hospital, Nexus runs on collaboration with local veterinarians. While your family vet handles your pet’s primary health concerns, Nexus provides many forms of specialized care to assist in maximizing your pet’s health and quality of life.

We believe in a compassionate & personal approach to everything we do. As Veterinary Specialists, our responsibility is to provide your family and your primary care veterinarian with the best possible treatment plan for your needs.

Nexus is a veterinarian-owned Speciality hospital founded by Veterinary Specialists. Nexus was formed in a strategic partnership with Beale's Best, an independent group founded by Veterinary Specialists, to bring hands-on Veterinary Continuing Education to the Golden Crescent. We are grateful to the Veterinary Community for welcoming us & joining our mission to put Victoria on the map as a hub of excellence in Clinical Care.

Brian Beale, DVM, DACVS

Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon
ACVS Founding Fellow

Dr. Beale knew he was going to be a vet since he was 9 years old. His original inspiration came from his Grandparents. Growing up he often spent his weekends at their home, covered in drool from playing with their English Mastiffs and Saint Bernards. In a recent article (American Humane), Dr. Beale wrote that his grandparents taught him the importance of the human-animal bond and the responsibility we have to give our pets the best care possible.

Dr. Beale’s passion is education. He has spent a large portion of his career teaching in hands-on surgery labs and speaking at large conferences. Dr. Beale co-authored Small Animal Arthroscopy, an industry defining textbook on orthopedics. He has written many other published articles and book chapters on specialized care.

Dr. Beale received his DVM & completed his residency at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. After his board certification he joined Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in 1992 and practiced there until 2019. In 2020, Dr. Beale founded BVSE with Dr. Mark Besancon.

Dr. Beale loves being a vet because he feels like he doesn’t have to work a day in his life. He enjoys spending his free time with his 3 kids, Isabel, Danielle, and Jared, and his wife, Mary.

Dr. Beale loves the Houston Zoo and has worked with their expert team of veterinarians on many occasions. Lions, sea turtles, monkeys, sloths, and kangaroos are only a few of the animals Dr. Beale has worked with.

Dr. Beale costarred on NetGeoWILD’s hit series, Animal ER, and he even hosted his own radio show, Your Pet’s Health, which aired on Houston KTRH 740.

Caleb Hudson, DVM, MS, DACVS-SA

Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon
ACVS Founding Fellow, Minimally-Invasive Surgery (Small Animal Orthopedic)

Dr. Hudson grew up in southern Missouri on a small farm and developed a strong interest in caring for animals through the practical application of science.  While in veterinary school at the University of Missouri he gained a fascination with veterinary surgery and after graduation in 2007 moved to Gainesville, Florida to complete a rotating internship followed by a small animal surgery residency at the University of Florida.  Post residency, he stayed on Faculty at the University of Florida until 2013 when he moved to Texas to work in private practice.  The surgery residency and subsequent years in practice have stoked Dr. Hudson’s early fascination with surgery into what has become a lifelong passion to excel in the field of orthopedic surgery.  Dr. Hudson strives to achieve the best possible outcomes for his surgical patients but is also passionate about clinical research, which leads to the development of new surgical techniques and devotes a large portion of his time to teaching other veterinarians to do surgery more effectively.  He travels, both in the United States and around the world, to speak about orthopedic surgical techniques.  In recognition of his surgical, research and teaching accomplishments, Dr. Hudson was awarded Founding Fellow status in Minimally Invasive Surgery (Small Animal Orthopedics) by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2021.

Stuart Johnson, DVM, DACVS

Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Stuart Johnson was born and raised in the farming community of Caldwell, Kansas.  From an early age he had a keen interest in animal health and animal husbandry.  That  interest lead him to seek out a career in veterinary medicine.  He graduated from Kansas State University in 1983.
Following graduation, he worked in mixed animal practices in Greenville, Texas and Corpus Christi, Texas.  While in Corpus, he attended the Surgical Forum presented by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.  From that, he decided to seek out a residency in surgery.  Dr. Johnson began his residency at Texas A&M University in 1986.  There he met his mentor, Don Hulse.  He and Dr. Hulse collaborated on several orthopedic research projects dealing with cranial cruciate ligament reconstruction and growth deformities.  Dr. Johnson finished his residency in 1989 and received a Master Degree in Veterinary Surgery.  The following year, he successfully passed the qualifications needed to be admitted to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

From there, he joined a cooperative group of specialty clinics know as the Greater Houston Veterinary Specialist.  In 2004, seeing his practice evolving into primarily an orthopedic case load, he opened a standalone, surgery only practice, Animal Surgery Center of Houston.  This practice was a “boutique” type of environment with the staff and Dr. Johnson lending a personal touch to the clients and referring veterinarians.  Dr. Johnson operated ASC until the summer of 2019 when he decided to retire, leave Houston and move to the coast.

In 2021, on the urging of Dr. Brian Beale, Dr. Johnson joined Nexus Veterinary Specialists in Victoria.  He primarily helps with the ever-expanding case load of small animal surgery.
Dr. Johnson and his wife Lisa enjoy taking their dogs Skye, a Labrador retriever, and Zaxby, a Boykin Spaniel to the beach.  They also like to boat and fish and travel in their RV.

Mark Besancon, DVM

Director of Operations

Special Interest in Veterinary Orthopedics

As a veterinarian & entrepreneur, Dr. Mark’s mission in life is to innovate, create, and educate. As a Texas native, Dr. Mark grew up in a family of animal lovers, and knew early on that he wanted to work with animals. He began his college career studying bioengineering at Texas A&M – Kingsville with an interest in orthotics & implant design, and later switched to veterinary medicine. Dr. Mark received his DVM in 2005 at Texas A&M and returned to Beeville to practice at a mixed animal hospital. He married Victoria native, Magen Kasper, shortly after graduating from veterinary school and they moved to Victoria in 2007 & joined a local small animal practice.

In 2009, Mark cofounded Crossroads Veterinary Clinic with Dr. Sam Williams to offer both small and large animal services to the Golden Crescent area. Today, Dr. Mark is the sole owner of Crossroads Veterinary Clinic, and continues to provide quality small animal services to the local and surrounding areas. Dr. Mark loves being a vet because he loves helping helpless animals and the satisfaction of keeping a pet alive and healthy for their owners.

Dr. Mark has a passion for innovation & design. Through his company, Besancon Innovations, he created and developed the MB Spinal Brace, a device designed & patented to aid in the medical treatment of back injuries in dogs, and the Leash EZ-Universal Leash Holder, which serves as a leash holding device for dogs. Dr. Mark continues to market and sell products, ideas, and procedures to improve all aspects of animal and human life.

Dr. Mark is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA), and is the secretary for the local Golden Crescent Veterinary Medical Association (GCVMA).

Dr. Mark and Magen have made Victoria their home along with their sons Kyler and Logan and three schnauzers Zoey, Copi and Jake. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, innovating new ideas, welding and construction projects.
